Well hey there, it’s been a couple of months, so it’s time for another roundup of what I’ve read, enjoying, listening to, and experiencing just recently. In addition to the things listed below, I have a couple of things in development: the 2nd season of Russian Doll, Oliver Burkeman’s Four Thousand Weeks, and I simply began dipping into Rebecca Woolf’s upcoming narrative, All of This. Oh, and I’m listening to Russell Shorto’s The Island at the Center of the World on audiobook and the 3rd season of Michael Lewis’ Against the Rules podcast. All constantly, do not sweat the letter grades excessive.
Everything Everywhere All at Once. This film is a bit of a wonder: action, funny, wholehearted, and a bit of a mess, completely in a best balance. This is the very best film I’ve seen in ages. (A )
Encanto. The kids and I liked it great. (B )
The Expanse (season 6). I’m going to miss out on spending quality time in this world with these individuals. (A-)
Matrix by Lauren Groff. Was thrilled and moved by this work of historic fiction about Marie de France. (A)
Station Eleven. I enjoyed the sluggish burn and resolution of this program. I didn’t believe I wished to view a television program about an influenza pandemic triggering completion of civilization, however it was in fact best. Both starlets who played Kirsten were great. (A/A )
The Last Duel. Every director is entitled to their Rashomon I think? And I’m not exactly sure Matt Damon was the best option here … (B)
Pig. Had no concept what to anticipate from this one. Nevertheless, Taken Truffle Hunters Fight Club Ratatouille was a surprise. (B )
Strafford ice cream. This Black-owned dairy farm makes the wealthiest, creamiest ice cream I’ve ever had. Happy I arbitrarily purchased a pint of it a couple of months ago … I’m never ever going back to anything else. (A)
Severance. Wonderful opening credits series and while I wasn’t as enamored as lots of sought the very first couple of episodes, the program absolutely grew on me. (A-)
My Brilliant Friend (season 3). I do not understand why there’s no more buzz about this program. The performing, world-building, story, and Max Richter’s soundtrack are all great. And the battle versus fascism! (A)
The Gilded Age. Precisely what I desired out of a duration drama from the maker of Downton Abbey and Gosford Park. (B )
Exhalation. 2nd time through, this time on audiobook. I enjoy these stories – Chiang is a genius. (A)
The Book of Boba Fett. This became season 2.5 of The Mandalorian and I am absolutely okay with that. (B )
Other People’s Money podcast. As a snack-sized in-between season for his exceptional Against the Rules podcast, Michael Lewis reviews his very first book, Liar’s Poker, blogged about his experience working for Salomon Brothers in the 80 s. (A-)
The King’s Man. Not as enjoyable as the very first motion picture however more enjoyable than the 2nd one? They all might be much better. (B)
Turning Red. I liked Domee Shi’s brief movie, Bao, and this movie is likewise creative and sincere. (A-)
Drive My Car. Truly valued the cinematography of this one; dream I might have seen it in the theater. (A-)
Jennifer Packer at The Whitney. I was not familiar with Packer’s work prior to seeing this exhibit, however I’m a fan now. (A-)
Licorice Pizza. I’m actually flabbergasted at the 2 meaningless racist scenes in this movie. PT Anderson is a much better filmmaker than this. It’s an embarassment due to the fact that I delighted in the remainder of the movie– the 2 leads are excellent. Can’t suggest it. (D)
Death on the Nile. These films are enjoyable. In some cases all you wish to do is view Kenneth Branagh chew surroundings as Hercule Poirot. (B )
Moonfall. Not as enjoyable or meaningful (I understand, lol) as a few of Emmerich’s other films. The acting in this is … not terrific. (C )
Hawkeye. Enjoyable however I do not understand the number of more Marvel things I wish to stay up to date with. (B)
Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is constantly enjoyable. (B )
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Much better than the overcomplicated follow up and Mikkelsen was a much better Grindelwald than Depp. The story finished up so well that who understands if there will be a 4th film. (B)
The Tragedy of Macbeth. Dazzling cinematography and set style. (B )
The Batman. Oh I do not understand. I think this was a quite good investigator story, however I’m not exactly sure why Batman required to be included. (B)
The Northman. This would have been far better had it ended 20 minutes faster. Not exactly sure we required another film that concludes with eventually meaningless violent manly vengeance. (B-)
Kimi. Soderbergh does Rear Window The Conversation. The instructions is constantly tight and Zoë Kravitz is terrific in this. (A-)
The Mysterious Benedict Society. The kids and I enjoyed this strong adjustment of the very first book of a popular series. (B )
Armageddon. The rate of this motion picture is amazing– it simply drops you right into the action and never ever picks up more than 2 hours. The leading concern when browsing this film title on Google is “Is Armageddon film a real story?” sigh (B-)
