Whatever happened to “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it?”

We live in a culture right now where “telling it like it is” is often confused with being outright and unnecessarily harsh. Unfortunately, this kind of behavior has also manifested itself within family dynamics as well. Who else misses the days of passive aggression and talking about your family members behind their back like a normal person?

In this instance, we have a 29-year-old who became the go-to chef in the family. She conceded that she isn’t the most talented cook in the world, but no one else in the family is willing or able to step up to the plate and do better, so really, no one should be allowed to complain.

This all changed when the author’s brother began bringing his fiancée Katie to family meals. Katie was one of those people who self-identified as someone who “tells it like it is,” so you know what that means, dear reader. It means she’s not a good person, but she likes to pretend that her ability to say “what we’re all thinking” somehow absolves her of being, well, unkind.
